Wannabe Writers #1

Wannabe Writers is a weekly meme hosted by Sarah at Confessions of the Unpublished. I love the idea of the meme, and this is my first time to participate in it.

Where I am in the writing process:
Since I started my yet untitled YA fantasy last March 27, I've reached a word count of 8,167 words out of 40,000-50,000.

My current problems:
I keep wondering if what I'm writing is good enough or if it's total crap. If it's good enough, then I want to keep on going. If it's total crap, I want to delete the whole thing and start over again. But how exactly do I do that? I have no sure way of knowing, so all I can do is keep on adding more words. I can worry about making sense later.

My questions this week: How do you know when you're good enough?
Like I said before, I have no sure way of knowing if I'm good enough. I guess all I can do is ignore my insecurities, and just keep going.

I might not be good enough now, but I have to keep in mind that I will be someday. As long as I keep writing, reading, and living, I'll continue to be a better writer. As long as I learn from my mistakes and forge on, I'm giving myself a chance at success.

I feel the same way all the time. Wondering if everything i write is crap. But you're right. I think that a big piece of being a writer is persistance. Just keep at it.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. Glad you decided to join in. Like Sarah said, persistence is the key to writing. The more you write the better you get. So keep on writing, don't delete anything and finish your first draft. Happy Writing!

I've written over a million words and I still don't know if I'm good enough, but I'm good enough for me to keep going. So I do. ;)

That sounds like good advise, Darlyn. My former creative writing teacher told us to 'just get it down on paper'. Set it aside for a while after finishing. Look at it again to edit (or re-write what you have to if it's total crap).

Those are deep questions, Darlyn! Sounds like this is your first book. I'd use it to learn, grow, and just keep on writing. Maybe it won't be "good enough" for publication. But that's what editing is for. And that's why so many of us have to write several books before we're finally able to apply fiction-writing techniques on a consistent basis, before we find our voice, etc. Don't give up!!
